“Generally, temperatures have fallen slightly in what used to be hottest parts of the aisle and risen slightly in what used to be coldest parts of the aisle, consistent with the nearly perfectly even air distribution the FabricAir ducts provide. A modest overall temperature reduction was realized, with a before average temperature of 25.2°C [77.4°F], and an after average temperature of 24.8°C [76.6°F]. Removal of the flex duct hoses has made movement up on the grid MUCH easier, and eliminated the risk of the hoses being damaged or moved.”

Ceiling Diffusers

FabricAir® Ceiling Diffusers are fully insulated, they prevent energy loss, eliminate any risk of condensation and are therefore suitable for isothermal or cooling conditions, and can be deployed for supply and extract air.

FAQ

The existing equipment rooms used metal ductwork and flexible hoses routed through a seismic grid above the racks. The hoses made access difficult, could not always be positioned where required and had been moved over time, contributing to uneven cooling. The FabricAir solution was introduced to provide more controlled and consistent air distribution.

The project used four Combi 85 fabric ducts, each supplying 1,420 CFM. SonicFlow provided directional air distribution while FabFlow allowed a small amount of air through the fabric surface. The ducts were installed below the seismic grid, reducing the number of grid penetrations compared with the previous flexible-hose arrangement.

The proof-of-concept project reported approximately 20% better energy efficiency together with more even cooling. Average aisle temperature changed from approximately 25.2°C to 24.8°C, while the previously hottest and coldest areas moved closer together in temperature. These results are specific to this installation.

Yes. The lightweight fabric sections can be temporarily disconnected or moved when access is required. In the Canadian telecom project, removing the flexible hoses also improved movement around the seismic grid and reduced the risk of hoses being damaged or repositioned.

Pressure loss increases when air passes through elbows, branches, dampers, grilles and other restrictions. A custom-engineered fabric duct system can distribute air directly along its length and may require fewer separate terminal components. Lower system resistance can reduce fan-power requirements, although actual savings depend on the complete HVAC design.
