Sports Facility Chooses Fabric Air Dispersion for HVAC
The newly opened Sportrade Cuatro Caminos in Madrid, represents one of the city’s most significant public sports infrastructure projects to date. Developed through a public-private partnership with Eductrade and promoted by the Madrid City Council, the facility is designed to offer accessible, high-performance fitness spaces in a sustainable and inclusive environment.
Spanning more than 9,200 square meters across five floors and a rooftop, the center includes two indoor swimming pools, wellness and training areas, strength and cardio gyms, social spaces, and medical-sports services. With capacity to serve over 11,000 users, Sportrade Cuatro Caminos is a benchmark for modern municipal fitness facilities in Spain.
Ventilation Challenges in a High-Performance, Multi-Zone Facility
The project was guided by principles of sustainability and functional design. One of the key challenges was to ensure optimal indoor air quality and thermal comfort in a facility that houses both high-humidity aquatic zones and dry, high-occupancy training rooms.
Indoor swimming pools present well-known HVAC design difficulties due to persistent humidity, risk of condensation, and aggressive indoor environments. Meanwhile, training spaces have fluctuating occupancy levels and demand precise airflow control to avoid drafts or stagnant air. A conventional ventilation solution would have struggled to meet the demands of such varied spaces.
Fabric Air Dispersion Chosen for Performance and Adaptability
To address these challenges, the engineering team specified a custom-designed fabric air dispersion system from FabricAir during the facility’s construction phase. Fabric ducts were selected for their ability to deliver uniform, draft-free airflow in both humid and dry environments crucial for ensuring comfort in areas with highly variable conditions.
The system includes a tailored combination of four air dispersion models—PerfoFlow, FabFlow, SonicFlow, and OriFlow, each selected to match the use and airflow needs of specific areas. All ducts were manufactured from Combi 20, a lightweight, durable technical fabric ideal for high-performance HVAC in both wet and dry zones.
The Type 08 All-In-One suspension system was used throughout, providing consistent alignment and a clean look while allowing for fast installation and easy access for future maintenance.
Enhanced Indoor Climate and Sustainable Performance
Since its opening, Sportrade Cuatro Caminos has delivered consistent indoor comfort across the entire facility. In the aquatic areas, the fabric system effectively prevents condensation and supports stable humidity control, effectively extending the lifespan of finishes and materials. In the gym and training rooms, occupants enjoy even temperatures and excellent air quality, even during periods of high activity.
The installation supports the center’s larger energy strategy, which includes geothermal, aerothermal, and photovoltaic systems, and aligns with goals for environmental responsibility by using efficient HVAC solutions.
Sportrade Cuatro Caminos demonstrates how fabric air dispersion can provide adaptable, sustainable performance for large-scale public facilities and sets a new standard for air distribution in Spain’s municipal sports sector.
