The Kaunas Swimming School was founded in 2001 with the mission to develop physical education and competition including swimming, modern pentathlon, water polo, disabled swimming, equestrian sports and triathlons.

They decided to upgrade their ventilation system to replace their outdated stainless-steel ducts after facing significant condensation issues that caused corrosion and water droplets to fall onto swimmers. Collaborating with air conditioning contractor Vėjų linija, they selected a custom-engineered fabric ducting solution from FabricAir. Determined to improve both comfort and safety, they worked with FabricAir Sales Manager, Paulius Šarapnickis to ensure the new system would withstand the high-humidity environment while eliminating the corrosion problems commonly associated with stainless steel ducting.

Addressing High-Humidity Challenges in Indoor Pools

Indoor swimming pools are prone to elevated humidity levels, often resulting in condensation on metal duct surfaces. Over time, this moisture leads to corrosion, leaks, and dripping water that disrupts swimmers and poses potential safety or health hazards. In addition, maintenance can become costly if rust or mold develops within the ductwork. The facility in Kaunas wanted to eliminate these challenges, prompting the search for a more reliable and sustainable HVAC solution.

BEFORE: Stainless steel ductwork was installed in the Kaunas Swimming School but faced significant condensation issues due to the high humidity.

A Custom-Engineered Solution

The installation team at Vėjų linija mounted a FabricAir solution custom designed to handle both high humidity and precision airflow requirements (6,300 m³/h). Key components of the system include:

  • Fabric: Combi 80 was selected for its permeable, corrosion-resistant properties.
  • Air Flow: SonicFlow and NozzFlow, provide directional airflow that effectively circulates air across the entire pool area.
  • Suspension: The Type 07 suspension system is an aluminum rail system with hot dipped galvanized suspension parts designed for harsh environments. The RapidSlider hanging system enables quick and efficient installation.
  • Shape Retention: 360° Internal Hoops make sure the ducts maintain an open look even when airflow is off, eliminating any unsightly sagging or wrinkles. The taut endcap ensures a finished look from every angle.

This custom design not only withstands the harsh conditions that occur in pool spaces but also prevents the condensation-related dripping that once affected visitors below. By replacing the corroded metal ducts with fabric ducting, the facility now maintains a more stable climate with a significantly reduced risk of moisture accumulation.

A More Comfortable, Safe Environment

The combination of SonicFlow and NozzFlow air flow models provides efficient air circulation, keeping humidity in check and improving air quality around the pool deck. Additionally, the quick and low-maintenance nature of the fabric system means less downtime and simpler upkeep for facility managers.

Fabric ducting can effectively resolve the challenges posed by high-humidity environments, particularly in indoor swimming pools. FabricAir’s corrosion-resistant materials and custom flow models have improved comfort, safety, and operational efficiency. As a result, the pool now offers visitors a reliable, high-performance atmosphere, highlighting the growing appeal of fabric ducting solutions in even the most demanding conditions.
