Sputnik, one of the most prominent climbing gyms in Madrid, has become a benchmark for climbing enthusiasts, offering a unique experience for both beginners and seasoned climbers. With a large area that includes walls of various heights, overhangs, and ceilings, the space blends athletic challenges with social areas, making it a hub of constant activity.

Problem

Like any sports facility, the climbing gym faces specific challenges related to indoor air quality. The intense physical activity generates significant body heat and humidity, creating conditions that can lead to unpleasant odors and a stuffy atmosphere if ventilation is not properly managed. The complex geometry of the space—with vertical walls and overhangs—also complicates uniform air distribution.

Climber comfort is essential for both performance and safety, but traditional ventilation systems posed a key issue: avoiding disruptive air drafts that could interfere with users’ focus and overall experience. Sputnik needed a solution that could ensure optimal indoor climate conditions, eliminating odors and providing a comfortable temperature without compromising the climbers’ experience or interfering with their activity.

Solution

To tackle this challenge, Sputnik turned to FabricAir, specialists in custom-designed textile duct systems. The FabricAir team began with a detailed analysis of the gym’s layout and airflow dynamics, identifying critical areas where odor accumulation and heat generated by users could most affect comfort.

The solution involved a fully customized textile duct system, tailored to the unique characteristics of the facility. The ducts, made from Combi 90 fabric, were engineered to ensure even distribution of fresh air throughout the climbing gym. Thanks to their flexibility, the ducts were installed in strategic positions, avoiding interference with climbing walls and ensuring that airflow would not create uncomfortable drafts in practice areas.

The design included PerfoFlow and SonicFlow airflow models to gently disperse air in high-activity zones and ensure effective odor extraction in critical areas. Additionally, the Type 8 All-In-One suspension system facilitated installation in a space where accessibility was a challenge, minimizing setup time and ensuring efficient maintenance.

Results

Since the installation of FabricAir’s textile duct system, Sputnik has seen a significant improvement in indoor air quality. Users report a fresher and more comfortable atmosphere, even during peak hours. The elimination of odors and thermal stability has enhanced the overall experience in the gym, supporting both athletic performance and enjoyment of the social areas. Moreover, the system’s low maintenance requirements and its seamless aesthetic integration confirm that the solution is not only effective but also a sustainable long-term investment.
